Theo Mullen adopted a maximalist gathering method in the waste piles, collecting as many materials as he could to bring into RAIR’s studio. Mullen used his waste finds to create composite forms that functioned both as autonomous works and as setups for photographs. After hours at the recycling center, Mullen used his sculptures and found materials to stage sparse, scattered compositions across the tipping yard, which he photographed from an aerial view using the facility’s High Reach.

There are ‘wormhole’ moments — lifting up one thing that uncovers another thing, that uncovers another thing. Some really amazing discoveries are made that way.
